What this tool does

LumenForge is a browser-based concept lighting design studio. It models building footprints, pathways and side areas; places parametric or custom luminaires; imports LM-63 IES photometry; calculates point-by-point illuminance; and presents plan, 3D concept, photometry, schedule and report views.

When to use this tool

Use LumenForge when you need an early lighting layout, lux comparison, fixture schedule or photometry study before confirming products, code requirements and final site conditions.

How to use this tool

  1. Set the project name, site dimensions, north rotation, building footprint, workplane height, activity and target illuminance.
  2. Add pathways or side areas and set their dimensions, rotation and lux targets.
  3. Select a fixture type, create a custom luminaire, or import an IES file; then generate an auto-grid, pathway row, perimeter layout or place fixtures manually.
  4. Choose the calculation scope, grid spacing, maintenance factor and display options, then run Calculate.
  5. Review average, minimum and maximum lux, uniformity U₀, target coverage, connected load, the false-colour map and the calculation assumptions.
  6. Use the photometry, luminaire schedule and report views, then export project JSON, lux-grid CSV, schedule CSV or a PNG plan, or print the report.

Inputs include site and building geometry, footprint profile or custom outline, ceiling and workplane heights, activity and target lux, surface reflectances, pathways and side areas, fixture quantity and placement method, luminaire lumens, wattage, beam angle, CCT, CRI, mounting height, IES photometry, calculation scope, grid spacing and maintenance factor.

Outputs

Outputs include plan and 3D concept views, photometry visualization, false-colour illuminance maps, average/minimum/maximum lux, uniformity U₀, target coverage, fixture count, connected load, power density, luminaire schedules, a printable calculation report, project JSON, lux-grid CSV, schedule CSV and PNG plan export.

Example use cases

Limitations and responsible use

This is a concept-level engineering calculator, not a certification or permit package. Generic fixtures use a rotationally symmetric cosine distribution based on beam angle. Imported IES files use their LM-63 candela table, while reflectance influence is represented through an estimated utilization factor rather than a radiosity calculation. Verify manufacturer photometry, mounting conditions, emergency-lighting requirements, applicable regulations, electrical constraints and final results with a qualified lighting professional.

Projects are saved in the browser and can be exported as JSON for portability. Browser storage may be cleared, so export a project file when a durable copy is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a manufacturer IES file?

Yes. Use Import IES in the Luminaires panel. The tool reads the file locally and uses its LM-63 candela data for the photometry and point-by-point calculation.

Does this replace a final lighting or code review?

No. It supports early design exploration and documentation. Final designs still require verified product data, applicable code and emergency-lighting checks, site conditions and professional review.
