SiteScope

Explore Victoria GIS and open map layers, draw a site boundary, check sun exposure, and estimate solar potential from adjustable assumptions.

What this tool does

SiteScope opens a map at Victoria, British Columbia, where you can search for an address, place, or latitude and longitude, or request your current location through your browser. It overlays selected public map features, provides City of Victoria zoning and parcel lookups where available, and includes a solar-position and photovoltaic screening panel. The map also supports a user-drawn study boundary, a changeable search radius, and street or satellite basemaps.

Who it is for

Homeowners, property researchers, planners, and designers who want an early, visual look at mapped features or broad solar conditions around a location.

How to use it

  1. Search for an address or place, enter latitude and longitude, or choose Locate and grant browser location permission. The starting map is centered on Victoria, BC.
  2. Set the study radius, choose map layers or a preset, and load the selected public data. The layers cover infrastructure, property and planning, and environment and mobility.
  3. Review feature counts and map popups. City zoning and parcel lookups are available only where the City of Victoria GIS has coverage.
  4. Use Draw site area to outline a polygon. In Solar & climate, select a date and time, adjust the sample object height, and edit the panel area, efficiency, performance ratio, projection period, and electricity rate.
  5. Download the currently loaded and enabled map features as CSV or GeoJSON. These exports contain mapped features, not a solar report.

Inputs

A searched address or place, coordinates, or an optional browser location; map radius and layer selections; drawn boundary points; solar date, time, and sample height; and photovoltaic area, efficiency, performance ratio, years, and electricity rate.

Outputs

A map with selected public features, location and area details, available Victoria zoning and parcel records, sun position and daylight estimates, modeled solar-weather summaries, adjustable indicative PV energy and value estimates, and CSV or GeoJSON downloads of loaded map features.

Example use cases

Data and limitations

SiteScope requests map, geocoding, GIS, and weather information directly from public third-party services and requires an internet connection. OpenStreetMap coverage and tags vary by place; City of Victoria municipal layers do not provide official records outside their coverage. Public services may be incomplete, unavailable, or rate-limited. This tool is not a land survey, utility locate, zoning determination, or substitute for current official records. Solar outputs are screening estimates: the PV model uses long-term horizontal solar data and adjustable assumptions, with a simplified 0.5% annual degradation factor. It does not model roof pitch or orientation, terrain, snow, horizon, or local shading, and is not engineering or financial advice. Locations, layer choices, and calculations are not saved to an account; reloading the page clears the current session.

Frequently asked questions

Are official zoning and parcel layers available everywhere?

No. Those lookups use City of Victoria open GIS and are only available within its coverage. Other map layers may use OpenStreetMap, whose completeness varies by area.

Can I rely on the mapped utilities before construction or excavation?

No. Mapped features may be missing or inaccurate. Obtain current utility locates, survey plans, and official zoning confirmation before making property or construction decisions.

Does the solar panel estimate account for my roof?

No. It is an indicative model based on horizontal solar-resource data and your assumptions; roof geometry, orientation, and site shading are not modeled.

Does SiteScope save my locations or include solar results in exports?

No. The page does not save locations between visits, and its CSV and GeoJSON downloads contain only loaded, enabled map features.
