SiteScope Greater Victoria

Explore Greater Victoria GIS, compare CRD aerial years, draw site boundaries, and screen solar potential using public data and adjustable assumptions.

What this tool does

A regional map explorer for Greater Victoria and the West Shore. Search for a place or coordinates, select a municipality, query available public GIS layers, switch street, satellite, terrain and topographic backgrounds, and request dated CRD aerial imagery. Optional contour, canopy and municipal-boundary overlays complement site drawing and a solar screening panel.

Who it is for

Homeowners, property researchers, planners and designers doing early map-based research. It is not an official municipal GIS portal, land survey or utility-locating service.

How to use it

  1. Search for an address, place or latitude and longitude, or use Locate with browser permission. Verify the automatically suggested municipality or choose it manually.
  2. Set the study radius and enable a few relevant layers. Layers start disabled. Use Refresh when changing the study location or radius; large selections can hit public-service limits.
  3. Inspect feature popups and the Data & coverage tab. Victoria, Saanich and Sooke have direct municipal connectors; other West Shore choices use available CRD records and links to their official portals.
  4. Open Map views to select a background or a CRD aerial year and opacity. Enable regional contours, canopy or boundary overlays as needed. Failed image requests leave the underlying map visible.
  5. Draw at least three boundary corners and finish the area. The drawn area fills the solar panel-area input; adjust it to the usable panel area rather than assuming every square metre can hold panels.
  6. In Solar & climate, select a date and time, inspect sun direction and sample shadows, optionally calculate five-year hourly weather averages, and adjust PV assumptions.
  7. Export loaded, enabled vector features as CSV or GeoJSON. These downloads do not include raster imagery, terrain overlays, solar calculations or the drawn study boundary.

Inputs

Location or optional browser geolocation, municipality, search radius, layer selections, map view, imagery year and opacity, drawn polygon corners, solar date and local time, sample object height, usable panel area, efficiency, performance ratio, projection years and electricity rate.

Outputs

Available public map features and records, raster overlay previews, approximate drawn area, sun position, daylight and simple shadow estimates, forecast or modeled solar-weather summaries, indicative PV energy and electricity-value estimates, and CSV/GeoJSON vector-feature downloads.

Data and limitations

An internet connection is required. CDN assets, OpenFreeMap, Esri, municipal/CRD GIS, Photon, Overpass, Open-Meteo and NASA POWER are external services; requests disclose relevant locations or map bounds to those providers. Service availability, rate limits, licensing, publication dates and geographic completeness vary. An empty layer is not proof that no feature exists. Municipality suggestions use place names or coarse proximity, not legal boundary verification. Portal links for Langford, Colwood, View Royal, Highlands and Metchosin do not mean every local dataset is connected. CRD imagery, contours and canopy layers are published snapshots and may fail or be unavailable outside their extent.

Solar and weather values are models, not site measurements. PV screening uses horizontal solar-resource data, user assumptions and simplified 0.5% annual degradation; roof pitch, orientation, terrain, snow, horizon and local shading are not modeled. Shadow length is a simple geometric estimate for the entered object height. Results are not engineering, planning, excavation or financial advice. Confirm current records, permits, utility locates and survey information independently. Session selections are not saved to an account and are cleared on reload.

Frequently asked questions

Are municipal layers complete across Greater Victoria?

No. Direct connectors and available CRD datasets differ by municipality and layer. Check the source and publication date, and use the official map link for confirmation.

Why can aerial imagery or a layer appear empty?

The service may be unavailable, outside its coverage, incomplete or rate-limited. Aerial years are individual published datasets, not live satellite images.

Do CSV and GeoJSON include everything on screen?

No. Only loaded and enabled vector features are exported. Raster overlays, basemap imagery, solar estimates and the drawn study boundary are not included.

Can I use the map for construction or a solar investment decision?

No. Use it for early research and obtain current official records, utility locates, professional surveys and a site-specific solar assessment before acting.
